Three of the most famous Australian drives you must take in your lifetime.
The sheer variety of spectacular road journeys in Australia makes it nearly hard to compare. Australia is a place that is best seen by driving. So get ready for an incredible road trip.
1. Great Barrier Drive, Queensland
There are, fortunately, lots of places to stop along the road. You might prolong your journey by taking a detour to the verdant Atherton Tablelands or by continuing to drive up the Captain James Cook Highway to Palm Cove.
Port Douglas is the next stop. Spend time in this laid-back tropical town and cruise out on the reef, enjoying the fantastic dining options and nightlife. Before entering Daintree National Park by river barge, go on a guided Dreamtime hike in the neighbouring Mossman Gorge.
Spend a couple of days exploring this maze of ancient rainforest, where must-dos include a river trip to look for crocs and guided woodland hikes. When you reach the remote Cape Tribulation, with its breathtaking desolate beaches, you will feel like the road ends.
2. South Australia's Kangaroo Island and the Fleurieu
With 1,600 kilometres of unpaved road, Kangaroo Island offers the most authentic South Australian driving experience. The journey there is half the fun: the breathtaking Fleurieu Peninsula offers two hours of breathtaking coastline and vineyards from Adelaide to Cape Jervis, thanks to the renowned McLaren Vale wine region.
The island itself, though, is incredible. It has wild, isolated beaches, fantastic cliff faces, a wealth of species, and more. Be sure to account for pit stops at Stokes Bay's swell, Admirals Arch, Remarkable Rocks, Cape Borda Lighthouse, and Flinders Chase National Park.
3. Great Ocean Road – Victoria
The world-famous route hugs the rocky western Victorian coast, past world-class surf beaches, unique features, and intriguing seaside communities. It is one of Earth's most stunning and magnificent coastal road excursions.
The Great Ocean Road starts in Australia's surf mecca of Torquay, swings past Bells Beach, and then continues along the coast to Cape Otway, a wild and desolate haven for koalas.
The Twelve Apostles and Loch Ard Gorge are required pauses before the road sweeps towards Warrnambool, with its whales, and Port Fairy, with its beautiful architecture and folk festival, before the natural drama rises again near the South Australian border.
A roomy van for long road trips is necessary if you have a big family. However, being able to pay for one outright is a different matter. Oxcel Finance can assist if you require a car loan for transportation purposes.
